Let’s Talk Service
An Exercise in Civil DiscourseConversations That Examine America’s Values and
Help Create a Shared Vision for Tomorrow
The Goal
Conversations that inspire
America today is dangerously divided. Pandemics, police brutality and politics have been catalysts to unrest. Ideas do not easily cross boundaries and willful misunderstanding has become the norm. We are wary of what lies ahead, uncertain of whether we can or should take part in the changes already underway.
America needs unity – a common vocabulary, a common understanding, and a shared vision of what our future could be. But conversation must precede action. To that end, we propose to spark a national conversation as one small step to establishing a beachhead in the land of shared values.
Live Events
A conversation is key because only through an engaged exchange of experiences and ideas can we find the essence of what binds Americans together. An inclusive dialogue that focuses on the strengths we can develop and the people who already know how. By creating a forum to enable that dialog, we will enable those who have lessons we can learn from to share their experiences and create the opportunity for us to learn.
America’s military veterans have much to offer. They have lived service and sacrifice. They have learned to work together toward a common ideal, and how to summon the inner resources to push forward in adversity. They can help us understand how to use the concepts of resilience, service, duty, courage and endurance as we aspire to reach higher common ground.
This proposal creates a pilot program that offers viewers a chance to hear from savvy experts on a range of topics in a ninety minute broadcast format. Each show may include films that introduce an area of discussion, interviews with veterans and/or other experts on this topic, and a live, interactive session that allows the general public to engage directly to learn more. A companion website will provide rebroadcast capabilities as well as extended versions of interviews and other related information.
Ask Your Questions
This unique offering gives people an essential voice that is missing in today’s polarized conversations and provides a safe haven for civil discourse on what it means to be American in challenging times. Programs will not only deliver powerful content in a live show environment but also serve as a spark, a catalyst, a ‘starter kit’ for conversations that continue on in our homes, communities and country well beyond the broadcasts’ end.
We intend for this series of programs to be strictly nonpartisan and non-prescriptive. The objective is to enable ourselves, all of us, to better engage in productive action to help understand and resolve current issues, however we define them.
